Can't Buy Love

If you think you have to spend money on Valentine’s Day, think again. More often than not, simple, sincere gestures make the most lasting impression and cherished memories. So many people whip out their credit cards to pay for things they can’t afford—expensive dinners, jewelry, and exotic flowers—because they think it’s expected. According to the American Society of Florists, Valentine’s Day is the No. 1 holiday for florists, capturing 36% of fresh flower transactions and 40% of their dollar volume. Know that you don’t have to spend a lot of money, especially if you don’t have it! Here are some ideas to consider that won’t add to your debt:

Write a love letter. Try it, you may surprise yourself and the response you get will be worth it. Or, if you’re up to it, write a song or poem and serenade your loved one.

Send an e-valentine. Free e-cards are all over the internet with options to personalize messages, pictures, and music. You can send as many as you want. If you think it’s too impersonal, make you own card. There are tons of ideas online.

Make a love song CD. Download or tape your favorites and top it off with your own voice introducing each song and why you chose it.

Go out for lunch, instead of dinner. Lunch, or even breakfast, is definitely less expensive than dinner and you can still spend the time together.

Rent a movie and stay home. With such busy lives, jobs, kids, the constant go, go, go, sometimes a quiet evening at home with someone you love can be a luxury. Look for a love story or romantic comedy. Pop some popcorn and have a soda.

Cook a romantic dinner at home. You’ve heard that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Women love a guy who can cook too. Light some candles and dim the lights.

Go for a drive. Be creative. Go to your favorite spot to spend some time together. You could even bring along a picnic basket.

Perfect your massage skills. Need I say more?
